CESTODE AND TREMATODE PARASITES OF AGAMA AGAMA FROM URBAN, BENIN CITY (UPPER SAKPONBA), EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Agama lizards from Upper Sakponba, Benin City in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria were investigated for their infection with cestodes and trematodes. A total of 26 lizards were captured and examined between January and April, 2021. The lizard harboured one Oochoristica sp., two trematodes, namely Mesocelium monodi and Infidum nigeranum. Prevalence of Oochoristica sp. was 58.82% in females but slightly higher (66.6%) in male Agama agama. Mesocelium monodi had a prevalence of (7.69%) and was only recorded in male lizards. Infidum nigeranum had a prevalence of 3.85% and a mean intensity 1.0 parasite/infected host. The parasite occurred in a male host.
