ABSTRACT
The research study focused on the Causes of poverty and underdevelopment in Owan East local government. The primary focus of this research is to identify the root causes of poverty and underdevelopment in Owan East local government and to propose appropriate solutions. Data for this study were gathered from two primary sources: primary and secondary. Primary data were collected through questionnaires administered directly to respondents, providing a reliable means of obtaining facts and figures. Secondary data were sourced from textbooks, journals, the internet, and conference proceedings. The methodology used for this study is simple random sampling and chi square formula to test for hypothesis. The study found amongst others that there is a significant relationship between respondents' opinions and the belief that lack of access to basic infrastructure and services contributes to the perpetuation of poverty and underdevelopment in Owan East Local Government Area. Furthermore, policy recommendations were adopted which include; To promote effective governance and positively impact the lives of rural residents through consistent service delivery, Owan East local government should reduce its over-reliance on federal allocations and enhance efforts to generate more revenue by diversifying its internal revenue streams, minimizing corruption, and advocating for greater autonomy.
