ABSTRACT
This study aimed to investigate the causes of high failure rates among students of University of Benin (UNIBEN) in sessional examinations. A survey research design was employed, and a sample of 100 UNIBEN students was selected using stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed. The results showed that lack of adequate preparation, poor time management, and inadequate study materials were the major causes of high failure rates among UNIBEN students in sessional examinations. In addition, the study recommends the implementation of tutoring programs, study skills workshops, increased faculty-student interaction, improved teaching and assessment methods, enhanced student engagement in class, goal setting and time management programs, improved library and research facilities, and the establishment of a monitoring system to track the progress of these recommendations' implementation. Furthermore, the study encourages collaboration among stakeholders to collectively work towards improving the overall educational experience at UNIBEN. Implementing these recommendations can help reduce the high failure rates among UNIBEN students in sessional examinations.
