ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the Causes of Absenteeism among Secondary School Students in Oredo Local Government Area.
In realization of this objective, simple random sampling method was used in selecting five schools, twenty students were selected each of the sampled schools which constituted the population. The total study sample of the population administered was 100. In order to achieve the purpose intended, six research questions were raised in the study.
The study revealed that The rate of absenteeism is high among secondary school students in Oredo local Government Area, that the location of secondary schools slightly influenced absenteeism among secondary school students in Oredo local Government Area, that student’s lack of interest for a particular subject make them stay away from school, that instructional method used by secondary school teacher’s causes student absenteeism, the nature of school discipline influences student’s rate of absenteeism and Lack of teachers influenced absenteeism in secondary school. From the findings, the following recommendations were proffered: A regular Parent-Teachers meeting, Student should be motivated to learn by given them incentives, there should be modifications of teaching techniques, School counselors should engage on heart to heart talks with student instead of punishment and lastly government should employ more teachers.
