ABSTRACT

This study investigated the causes and impact of broken homes on senior secondary school students academic achievement in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, six research questions were raised and one was hypothesized and tested at 0.05 level of significance.

Survey research design was employed in this study.The population for the study consists of all married parents, teachers and students of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size was made up of two hundred (200) respondents, twenty (20) from each school. The instrument for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire titled, The Causes and Effect of Broken Homes on the Academic Achievement of Secondary School Students in Nigeria (EBHAPSSSN) which was distributed to the participant. The descriptive statistic (mean X) was used in analyzing the data collected. A mean of 2.5 and above indicates agreement with the item stated while a mean of 2.49 and below indicates disagreement.

Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that schools should bolster their counselling services, ensuring that professional counselors are available to offer emotional and psychological support to students affected by broken homes, schools should provide specialized training for teachers to help them identify and support students from broken homes. Teachers should be equipped with strategies to foster a nurturing and understanding classroom environment and also, local government authorities should establish programs and initiatives aimed at supporting parents and families experiencing difficulties.
