ABSTRACT

Indigenous language deficiency is a critical issue in Linguistics reflecting the lack of proficiency in native language. The study aims to investigate the causes and effects of indigenous language deficiency among five selected Ẹdo linguistics students in the University of Benin. Using sociocultural theory as the theoretical framework to analyze language learning and the sociocultural factors influencing indigenous language deficiency, quantitative research approach was adopted, employing questionnaires to gather data. The causes and effects of indigenous language deficiency explored include, lack of proper funding, dominant language, urbanization and migration, reduced exposure, cultural disconnection, loss of cultural knowledge, challenges in reading comprehension, lower confidence in oral communication, and loss of cultural heritage and tradition. By understanding the causes and effects of indigenous language deficiency, appropriate measures can be implemented to address this issue and preserve the linguistic heritage of the Edo people.
