ABSTRACT

This study examined the causes and effect of industrial action in higher institutions. In carrying out this research study, primary and secondary sources of data collection were employed, while chi-square and simple percentages were used to analyze the data collected through the administration of questionnaires from a sample of UNIVERSITY OF BENIN students. Also, in carrying out the research, four research questions were adopted and three hypotheses were formulated. The results of one the tested hypothesis confirmed that there is a relationship between poor working environment in the UNIVERSITY OF BENIN and industrial conflict. Another also tested that there is no significant relationship between non payment of workersentitlement and strike actions.The study recommended that university autonomy be granted and the retirement age be extended,another recommendation includes staff salaries must be paid on time including promotionsand other benefits should always be given to employees as they become due,and also the federal government should endeavor to implement it's agreement reached. All these are necessary to ensure that university system is in good shape and is capable of competing with other international higher institutions of learning across the world.
