Abstract
This study investigated the causes and consequences of pre-marital sex among secondary school students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state.
Specifically, the study examined the causes responsible for secondary school students involvement in pre- marital sex. The study also evaluated the consequences of premarital sex among secondary school students.
The study adopted the case study research design. The population of the study is 63 ss2 students in a public mixed secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area.the sample size is 50 students selected through convenient sampling because of its suitability with the population characteristic. Also, some of the effect of pre marital sex among secondary school students is unplanned pregnancy, school drop out,victims of rituals and Poor academic performance. The instrument used for data collection were the questionnaire which was titled Pre-marital Sex Questionnaire (PSQ), and this instrument contains two sections.Section A is on the demographic data such as sex and age. The second section contains 12 items with 4 options like scale of Strong Agree(SA) Agree(A), Disagree(D) and Strongly Disagree (SD).This Instrument were validated by three experts in the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counseling Psychology (EECP). Data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation.
The findings from the study reveal that there are causes and consequences of pre-marital sex among secondary school student in Oredo Local Government Area Edo State. Thus the class which was examined was above an average of 3.5.It was therefore concluded that the causes and consequences of pre-marital sex among secondary school student in Oredo Local Government Area Edo State is high.
It was therefore recommended amongst others that the Federal Government of Nigeria and the seats government should promulgate a degree and enact an edict a degree banning pornographic materials and also the sale of contraceptive and condom should be supervised to reduced the ill information and pattern on sex to adolescents and adults and Oredo Local Government Area in particular. Counsellors should constantly be in contact with the students and educate them on sexuality .Also parent should endeavour to provide the Necessary materials for their children in other to discourage commercial sex among adolescence.
