ABSTRACT
Blindness is a lack of vision. It may also refer to a loss of vision that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses.Blindness has negative effects on the quality of life and by extension on building up skills and self-reliance. Measuring and promoting the quality of life of the visually challenged has become a priority. However they have become a priority in wealthy countries which is the reason it is only there that diverse research on the quality of life among blind individuals have been carried out. I assessed the various causes of blindness, and determined if duration of blindness affected the Quality of life of blind individuals in Benin city. This study was carried out using 60 participants aged 10-25 years recruited from the school of the blind Benin city. Ophthalmic examination was conducted and a comprehensive case history taken to determine the onset and duration of blindness. A standard WHO quality of life questionnaire was used in this study to test participants satisfaction with different life domains. Since we are assessing blind individuals, the questions will be read out to the participants with responses carefully recorded in the questionnaire and data analysed using SPSS (statistical package). The result revealed that do you feel inhibited by your looks, how comfortable is the place where you live, do you feel your condition can hinder you from achieving your dreams, do you feel socially isolated, and how much do your condition hinder you from making friends have significant relationship with duration of blindness (P<0.05) while do you feel you are living in a safe and secure environment and how alone do you feel in life have no significant relationship with duration of blindness (P>0.05). The R2 of this study was 0.54 (54%).
