CASSAVA FARMERS PERCEPTION OF THE USE OF DEMONSTRATION METHODS IN AGRICULTURE INFORMATION SOURCING IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study assessed cassava farmers perception in the use of demonstration method in agriculture information sourcing in Edo State, Nigeria. specifically, the study examined the socio-economic characteristics of cassava farmers; ascertain respondents’ access, frequency of use, and preference for demonstration methods use in agriculture information sourcing; examine motivational factors and respondents; perception of the use of demonstration methods, and identify constraints in agricultural information sourcing. A random sample of 150 cassava farmers were selected for the study. Data were solicited with questionnaire and analysed with frequency counts, percentage, mean and standard deviation and hypothesis was tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and multiple regression. Results showed that majority (61.1%) of the respondents were female 50.9% were between 40 and 49 years, most (89.8%) were married, majority (63.9%) had secondary education, most (94.4%) had farm size of between 1 and 5 hectares. Majority (63.0%) use field demonstration for chemical most (84.3%) use demonstration for chemical usage, and was their highest preference (M=3.52). respondents had the highest perception (M=3.65) that demonstration methods gives reliable and up-to-date information and were most seriously constrained by inadequate awareness of demonstration methods. There was a positive significant xi relationship between age r=0.52, P<0.05 farm size (r=0.49, p<0.05), household size (r=0.37, p<0.05) and annual income (r=0.68, p<0.05) were significantly related to respondents perception of demonstration methods. It was recommended that government should provide an enabling environment such as infrastructure, transportation, to the farmers to visit demonstration sites and agricultural extension workers to organize demonstration with a view to solving the challenges associated with demonstration.
