Demulsifiers have proven to be useful in oil field operations. Hence, a call for deeper research into the potentials of these materials can only be underemphasized. Additionally, based on the structure and composition of demulsifiers, they can work in similar ways as surfactants and polymers (which are commonly used for enhanced oil recovery). In the presence of deep and conscientious research, demulsifiers can help optimize production in such fields that are candidates for EOR. An extended review of the cost and economic viability of demulsification for water production reduction and other possible areas of application is advised. This will help to identify how much operational costs will be reduced or otherwise upon adoption of the proposed technique. A more detailed overview of the technical viability of demulsification for water shut off (and other potential areas of application is suggested). Doing this will help identify the best technology to adopt for this approach. Moreover, in such a research, all the important factors that influence the performance of demulsifiers, and their compatibility with different rock and fluid types should be highlighted.
