ABSTRACT

Background/ Purpose of the study : Cerebral palsy (CP), a multifaceted developmental disorder emerging during infancy, is characterized by functional impairments rooted in central nervous system development. Parents and family caregivers play a pivotal role in shaping healthcare decisions for the child, influencing the trajectory of care. This study aim to determine the perceptions of caregivers regarding children with CP at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Method: Qualitative research design was utilized in this study via semi-structured interviews. Participants were selected through purposive sampling: male and female caregivers of children with CP who met the inclusion criteria were picked. According to the sampling method, 20 participants who met the study's inclusion criteria were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the qualitative data acquired during the participant interviews. Result: The caregivers shared their experiences with the diverse types of care they provided for their children with cerebral palsy. These caregiving activities included physiotherapy, occupational therapy, home-based interventions, and personal care. The sub-themes below illuminate the perceived benefits of these specific treatments. The caregivers also emphasized the significance of support from family members, community members, and healthcare professionals. Caregivers of children with cerebral palsy encounter unique challenges and have recognized needs that can assist them in their caregiving journey Conclusion: In conclusion , this research study revealed that caregivers of children with disabilities like CP encounter a multitude of challenges across social, physical, psychological, and financial spheres. These struggles arise from insufficient support within familial structures, persistent social stigma, and a lack of comprehensive governmental assistance and resources specifically tailored to the needs of caregivers.
