CAREER MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR BUSINESS EDUCATORS’ SUCCESS

ABSTRACT

            This study investigated the influence of career management strategies on business educators’ success in colleges of education in South-West Nigeria. To guide the study, ten research questions were raised and answered, four corresponding hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance.

            The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population and sample for the study comprised all the 135 business educators in public colleges of education in South-West Nigeria. The instrument for data collection was a 52 items questionnaire titled: “Career Management Strategies on Business Educators Success Questionnaire” (CMSBESQ). The questionnaire was made up of two sections A and B. Section A contained the demographic characteristics of the respondents which included the gender, marital status, work experience and ownership of institution. Section B comprised 52 items grouped into six sub-sections to measure business educators career success. The instrument was validated by three (3) experts:- the researcher’s supervisor, another expert from the field of business education and one Psychometrician all from the Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The results of the reliability test yielded a coefficient of 0.88. Data collected from the respondents were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and two sample independent t-test at 0.05 level of significance.

The findings of the study revealed that networking with co-lecturers, people and other employee influence business educators’ career success in colleges of education in South-West Nigeria. Furthermore, the findings revealed that mentorship (accomplishment of tasks, meeting goals, career progression and willingness to accept change) significantly influenced the career success of business educators. Findings also revealed that accepting more responsibility increased knowledge and skill of employees. It was concluded that career management strategies influenced business educators’ career success. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that business educatorswho engaged in networking behaviours are more satisfied with their careers; newly employed business educators should willingly seek advice and guidance from experienced business educators at all time as it boosts their academic development and productivity.
