ABSTRACT

Mayuku Creek is utilized for both crude oil exploration and boat navigation in Sapele, Delta State. The sediment accumulation and water depth in the Creek have changed significantly over time. Bathymetric surveys were therefore carried out to ascertain the creek's depth. The proposed DFFW 01 slot underwent capital dredging, and the creek's section was swept, to enable effective environmental management and navigation.

The depth data of the creek was obtained in this study through pre- and post-bathymetric surveys, which allowed for the proper execution of capital dredging of the DFFW 01 slot and sweeping of the section of the creek. clearing brush, building bond walls, and creating runoff channels within the slot. Dredging of DFFW 01 slot to full depth and floatation up to 4 meters above sea level. Monitoring the tidal behavior of the creek was aided by the installation of a tidal gauge.  A total of 38,672.63 m2 of sectional areas made up the computed area covered by the pre- and post-bathymetric survey, and 75,356.18 m3 was the calculated volume. At 4.03 meters, the ultimate depth was predetermined.

The installation of structures like the oil wells at the creek required not only the creation of a safer navigable path for watercraft but also the completion of a bathymetric survey, the capital dredging of the DFFW 01 slot, and the sweeping of the section of the creek. It is recommended that the creek depth be regularly monitored to enhance navigation and lower the number of incidents on the waterway.
