ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Burnout syndrome is defined as a conceptualised syndrome that results from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed (World Health Organisation (WHO), 2019). AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and correlates of burnout syndrome among healthcare professionals (specifically physiotherapists, medical doctors, nurses, medical laboratory scientists and radiographers) in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin city, Edo state, Nigeria. METHODS: A cross sectional study involving 181 health care professionals recruited using Stratified random sampling technique from staff of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) formed the participants of the study. Maslach burnout inventory questionnaire was used for this research, to assess their level of burnout. The questionnaires were selfadministered by the researcher. The data was analysed using the International Business Machine (IBM) Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 21.0 and the significant level was set at 0.05. RESULTS: Participants’ age ranged between 31 to 40 years. 105 of the participants were male (58%), 99 (54.7%) and 114 (63%) were medical doctors. 85 (47.0%) of the respondents had high level of emotional exhaustion. 110 (60.8%) of the respondents had high level of depersonalisation and 174 (96.1%) of the high level of reduced personal accomplishment. There was significant relationship between emotional exhaustion and age (ρ = 0.001) (r = 21.993), between emotional exhaustion and occupation (ρ = 0.007) (r = 20.883), number of days working per week (ρ = 0.005) (r = 14.831) as well as number of hours spent working per day (ρ < 0.001) (r = 0.334). There was significant association between marital status and depersonalisation (ρ = 0.002) (r = 20.482), occupation (ρ = 0.020) (r = 18.144), number of days working per week (ρ = 0.026) (r = 11.043). CONCLUSION: There is a high prevalence of burnout among healthcare professionals in Nigeria, particularly in the domain of reduced feeling of personal accomplishment. Factors such as age, occupation, number of hours spent on work daily, duration of work per week and marital status were found to be associated with burnout among healthcare professionals.
