ABSTRACT

Background: Burden of a caregiver is a multidimensional issue. It can be affected by numerous factors and these factors can be different to some extent in different countries. Aim: To determine the association between sociodemographic variables and caregiver burden of caregivers of spinal cord injured patients. Methods: This is a cross sectional study involving 78 participants. All participants who met the inclusion criteria were recruited for this study and convenience non-probability sampling technique was used to recruit individual participants. Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (ZBI), was used to assess the caregiver burden of the participants. Results: Majority of the participants 32.05% (n=25) were within 26-35 years of age; 21.79% (n= 17) were within 19-25 years while 20.51% (n=16). Approximately 56.41% (n=44) were female. Age (X2 =27.39; p =0.001), gender (X2 =5.643; p =0.001), marital status (X2 =4.116; p =0.001), employment status (X2 =7.695; p=0.025), educational level (X2 =184.04; p=0.023), and relationship status (X2 =2.885; p=0.001) had significant relationship with caregiver burden. Conclusion: Sociodemographic variable were significantly associated with caregiver burden. These findings corroborate with previous studies that the burden score of a caregiver is a multidimensional issue. It can be affected by numerous factors and these factors can be different to some extent in different countries. Keywords: Caregiver burden, SCI
