BUILDING A SECURITY INTELLIGENCE SYSTEM USING SOCIAL MEDIA

ABSTRACT

Social Media in the form of intelligence presents great potential with important relevance as a rich information source be it any aspect of intelligence, therefore this research proposes a means to collect and analyze data thereby creating and obtain valid security intelligence using the wide and information rich social media as its sources. This research project aims to use sentiment analysis to identify elements on social media which can be used as security intelligence on any topic. Security Intelligence can be best described as an anticipatory discipline that analyses human behaviour. It can be defined as the information relevant to protecting an organization, an industry or assuring general public safety gained from accessing and analysing multiple structured and unstructured data sources. Sentiment analysis is a field of research that uses natural language processing to determine emotion (sentiment) in data gotten from text and extracting and categorizing opinions and sentiments behind the data. It makes use of data mining and natural language processing. This project aimed to ascertain the method of getting and analyzing security intelligence using the sentiment analysis software GATE. This project employed social media for its data collection using an extraction tool and plugin on GATE.
