ABSTRACT
This study examined the relationship between board attributes and the likelihood of financial statement fraud in listed deposit money banks in Nigeria.
The study utilised a sample of thirteen (13) listed deposit money banks using the random sampling technique and statistical filtering procedure. The study covered a five (5) year period (2013 - 2019). Secondary data were sourced for the study from annual reports of the selected companies while the binary probit regression was employed for the data estimation.
The findings of the study revealed that foreign directors have a negative influence in reducing the likelihood of financial statement fraud, while board independence, female board director, number of board meetings do not have a significant influence on financial statement fraud. Furthermore, we found foreign board director have positive and moderating effect on the nexus between board independence and financial statement fraud. This study recommends that banks should employ the service of more foreign detectors in their board.
