ABSTRACT

A wide array of ethnomedicinal values has been attributed to the different parts of Andrographis paniculata, and countries like India, Asia and China extensively use the plant for treatment of several diseases like fever, common respiratory cold, as antidote to snakes bite poisons. Anti diabetic effects was carried out on the aqueous extract of Andrographis paniculata leaves. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of aqueous extract of Andrographis paniculata on glucose, total cholesterol and total protein levels in Wistar rats. A total of Eighteen (18) male Wistar rats were divided into three groups of five (5) rats in group 1, seven (7) rats in group 2 and six (6) rats in group 3. They were placed on diet (rat chow) and water. Group 3 were administered aqueous extract of Andrographis paniculata for a period of 14 days. Weekly measurements of body weight were carried out. After 14 days, the rats were subjected to overnight fast after which they were sacrificed, with their blood samples collected into sterile containers with anti coagualant. Glucose, cholesterol and protein assays showed decreased levels for aqueous extract of the leaves and stems of Andrographis paniculata. The investigation into the anti-diabetic effects of the aqueous extract of Andrographis paniculata revealed a significant effects of total cholesterol and glucose level in the serum of the Wistar rats establishing the acclaimed anti-diabetic activity. The results justify the use of leaves and stem of Andrographis paniculata for the treatment of diabetes. Further experiments are needed to evaluate its safety.
