ABSTRACT

The research study centered around the screening of some bioactive components found in tailor ant ( Oecophylla longinoda ) as well as to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of the tailor ant extract. The ants were collected, crushed and extracted with methanol in soxhlet extractor apparatus and the bioactive chemical screening was performed using standard method. The results indicated glycoside, saponins, phenolics, terpenes, eugenols, alkaloids and flavonoids were present in the methanol extract of tailor ant. Antimicrobial activity was done using the agar well diffusion method. The antimicrobial readings showed significant activity of escherichia coli (27mm), Pseudomonas (27mm), staphylococcus aureus (27mm), mucus (45mm), aspergillus (27mm), penicillium (25mm) at the highest dose when compared to the standard drug Ciprofloxacin. The research thus confirmed significant  activity of methanol extract of tailor ant against micro-organisms.The study revealed that Oecophylla longinoda contains bioactive constituents with high antimicrobial activity against the bacteria isolates and could potentially possess rich medicinal values when subjected to further chemical and pharmacological studies.
