ABSTRACT

Vernonia amygdalina is a shrub that has been commonly known as bitter leaf due the bitter taste of the leaves. The study was carried out to investigate the protective effects of bi-herbal formulation of aqueous extracts of Vernonia amygdalina and Carica papaya on male albino Wister rats.

It is widely used as a daily green vegetable or herb to treat fertility problem, malaria and diabetes. The therapeutic actions of plants rely solely on the bioactive compounds contained in such plants. Bioactive compounds are synthesized basically from plant primary metabolites such as amino acids, carbohydrates and lipids. Bioactive compounds can be isolated, identified and characterized using standard analytical protocols. Edible leaves of Vernonia amygdalina and Carica papaya are used traditionally in various parts of the world, especially in Africa and Asia, for the alleviation of pathologic conditions. Bio-therapeutics are preferred to drugs by many people worldwide due to their ease of accessibility, low cost of usage and low incidences of side effects associated with the use of herbs as well as cultural consideration. Thus, the leaves of The exact mechanism by which this extract reduce sperm count is not known, but previous studies has shown that antimalarial remedies usually have antifertility effect. Carica papaya has been known to be used in the treatment of fetility (Titanji et al., 2008). Thus, there is a possible relationship between its antimalarial and anti-fertility activities.4.5.1.Sperm Cell Assessment should be subjected to more extensive and rigorous medicinal evaluation as well as consider the use of bioactive compounds from these plant.
