ABSTRACT
The study aimed to investigate how TikTok influence the basic science students’ perception on their academic performance. A descriptive survey research design was employed in this study. Four(4) research questions were raised to guide the study. The target population was eighteen thousand eight hundred and forty (18,840) junior secondary school (JSS) students from 13 junior secondary school located in Ehirim local government area of Edo State and a sample size of one hundred and eighty (180) junior secondary school students from schools in Egor local government area, was selected using simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology while the test-re test reliability method was adopted to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count and simple percentages. The research sought to determine the extent of TikTok usage, its influence on academic performance, the perceived benefits and drawbacks of TikTok on basic science students, as detailed in the literature review. A Total of 180 basic science students from secondary school participated, responding to a questionnaire title “ Basic Science Student’s’ Perception on the Influence of TikTok on their Academic Performance Edo State Secondary School” with a reliability value of 0.734 indicating high reliability. Data collection involved administering the questionnaire to basic science students and analysis was conducted using frequency count and simple percentage tables. The findings highlighted widespread of TikTok usage among basic science students with respondents acknowledging the influence of TikTok on academic performance. The study revealed that majority of the students perceived TikTok as having a negative influence on their academic performance. The study also found that the students’ excessive use of TikTok led to a decrease in their study time.In conclusion, the study recommends that schools should implement policies to regulate the use of TikTok and other social media platforms during school hours by implementing strict rules and guidelines that limit the use of these platforms during school hours. Schools should provide counseling and guidance service to help students develop healthy habits and time management.
