ABSTRACT
The bacteriological and physicochemical properties of source water(borehole) used for fish farming in Egor and Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City wereevaluated in this study. A total of twelve (12) samples were assessed from these local governments. Questionnaires were administered to the fish farmers to get their informed consent. Samples were collected and analyzed within four hours, standard microbiological analysis involving total heterotrophic count; totalcoliform bacteria count present in the source water; identification the bacteria most prevalent in the source water and physicochemicalproperties. The results showthat the mean value of total heterotrophic count1.71±6.97x 101cfu/ml was Egor while Oredo had a mean value of 0.85±3.47 x 101cfu/ml. The coliform bacteria count was1.76±7.18 x 10-1cfu/mlin Egor while Oredo was total free from coliform.The prevalence of bacteria isolates from source water from fishponds in Egor and Oredo LGA in Benin City showed that Escherichiacoli was most prevalent with a percentage of 18.19% while Morganellamorganii and Micrococcus luteuswere least prevalent with a percentage of 3.03%, other bacteria presentinclude, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus sp, Salmonella sp. andShigellasp.The physicochemical properties of Source water from fish ponds in Oredo and Egor LGA in Benin City had a mean pH of source water from ranges from 6.008±0.23(Egor) to 6.49±0.42(Oredo). Electric conductivity (EC) ranged from 96.2±58.91uS/cm in Oredo to 293±77.37uS/cm in Egor. The total dissolved solids (TDS) in Oredo had a mean value of 67.3±41.26mg/ml while Egor had a mean of 204.86±53.95mg/ml in fishpond source. The salinity of source ranges from 45.26±27.88in Egor LGA to 139.02±37.14in Oredo LGA. The mean value for turbidity of sourcewater from fishpondsranged from1±0NTU(Oredo)to2.2±0.84NTU(Egor).Alkalinity ranges from 5.6±1.82 in sourcewater from Oredo fishponds to 16.6±3.65in source from Egor fishponds.Source water hardness of 4.4±0.55 was observed in Oredo and 7.4±0.55were observed in Egor LGA. Phosphate, Sulfate and Nitrate content of source water were determined, ranging 1.308±0.46to2.812±0.35, 0.66±0.22 to 2.26±0.43and 0.68±0.08 to 3.16±0.59 in Oredo and Egor LGA respectively.
