ABSTRACT

The mangrove swamps of River Ethiope in Amukepe, Sapele, Delta State, present a unique ecological habitat that plays a crucial role in maintaining the environmental equilibrium of the region. This study aimed to assess the quality of sediments within this mangrove ecosystem, with a specific focus on bacterial populations, heavy metal concentrations, and physico-chemical properties.

In this investigation, sediment samples were collected from various locations within the River Ethiope mangrove swamps. Bacterial quality was assessed through microbiological analysis, including the identification of bacterial species and enumeration of colony-forming units (CFUs). Heavy metals, known for their potential environmental impact, were quantified through analytical techniques, and the physico-chemical properties of the sediments, including pH, organic matter content, and texture, were determined.

The findings of this study revealed a diverse bacterial community inhabiting the mangrove sediments, with several species adapted to the unique conditions of this ecosystem. Heavy metal concentrations varied among sampling sites, reflecting potential sources of contamination and natural variations in sediment composition. The physico-chemical properties of the sediments provided insights into the overall health and characteristics of the mangrove habitat.

This research contributes valuable data to the understanding of the River Ethiope mangrove ecosystem, highlighting the importance of monitoring bacterial populations, heavy metal levels, and physico-chemical attributes for its conservation and management. The results emphasize the need for continued environmental stewardship to preserve the ecological integrity of this vital coastal ecosystem in Delta State.
