ABSTRACT

This paper focus on awareness on the use of animal waste in the production of energy to farmers in Ovia north east local government area in Edo state. Five research questions were formulated to guide the study.

   The study employed descriptive research design. The population for the study comprised of two-hundred (200) animal farmers living in Ovia north east local government area of Edo state. Random sampling techniques were used in the selection of farmers, the sample size was made up of (100) randomly selected farmers from ovia north east local government area in Edo state, which gave a total sample size of (200) students used for this study.

   Validation was made by two experts in the department of agricultural science and economics and the other from the department of EELP, in university of Benin, Benin city, edo state. A test re- test was used in establishing the reliability of the questionnaire. The two scores were analyzed using Pearson’s product moment correlation co-efficient (r) formular and this yielded a reliability of 0.71 was obtained. The data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation for research question.

   The findings of the study revealed that animal waste can be used to generate electricity, also the difference in animal waste will affect waste treatment and the utilization of these waste to electricity will reduce pollution in the environment, as well as reduce the dependability on NEPA, as farmers will benefit from this source of electricity, and it was also discovered that farmers are not aware about the utilization of waste in the production of energy, as proper awareness has not been created. This work also recommended that in other to prevent pollution of the environment, and also pollution of underground water, farmers should be enlightened on how waste can be utilized to generate electricity, which will be beneficial to them. Awareness should be created in other to encourage farmers as well as the entire public on waste to energy.
