AWARENESS OF PATIENT BILL OF RIGHT AND IT’S INFLUENCE ON PATIENT SATISFACTION

ABSTRACT

Patients in the healthcare system have rights that need to be recognized and upheld. In accordance with current national laws and regulations, patients have the opportunity to receive care that meets their reasonable bodily, mental, spiritual, and social requirements. The main objective of this research is to examine awareness and practice of patient’s bill of rights among patients in university of Benin teaching hospital. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design. A stratified and convenient sampling technique was used to select the respondents. (Patients respondents:145). Data collection was obtained by the use of self-structured questionnaire. Data analysis was done using SPSS V26 and presented in frequency table, percentages, mean and standard deviation. Findings in this study showed that revealed that the that majority of the respondent 97% had high level of awareness of the Patient Bill of Rights, the showed that 61.4% of the respondents had a positive score of 2.5 or higher indicating they were knowledgeable about their rights and expressed higher levels of satisfaction with the average men of 2.8 which is greater than the critical mean of 2.5. Lastly, the study revealed that a majority of the respondents had encountered situations where they felt their rights were not respected or upheld. This study concludes that patients' rights serve as the foundation for ethical decision-making as well as the driving force behind the delivery of safe and efficient healthcare. Therefore, the researcher recommends that health institution should develop strategies and policies to prevent and respond to rights violations to address the identified barriers to patient rights, such as fear of negative consequences and feelings of intimidation.
