ABSTRACT

The study examinedthe Awareness and ICT Skills as Factors Affecting the Use of WEB-BASED OPAC by Postgraduate students. The Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and a well-structured questionnaire was used for data collection.

Data collected where analyzed using simple percentages and frequency. Results from the study, showed that the purpose for using WEBPAC by postgraduate student in university of Benin are to locate the book in the library, reserve the book which is borrowed by someone, check the number of copies in library stock and compile bibliography of books on a particular subject, the level of availability of WEBPAC for postgraduate student is high, there is a positive impact of WEBPAC for research among postgraduate students in the University of Benin, there are numerous problems encountered by postgraduate students while accessing and using the WEBPAC in the University of Benin. These problems include: lack of proper search strategies and lack of power supply, installed OPAC module not always updated, lack of orientation from library staff and OPAC access is password protected.

In the light of the findings of this study, the following recommendations were made: Library administrators should always create awareness programs for students on the positive impact of WEBPAC for research. Library staff should be trained and the role of librarians on the use of WEBPAC should be emphasized, The installed OPAC modules should be updated regularly, There should be alternative power supply to eradicate the problem of inadequate power supply.
