ABSTRACT

This study seeks to assess the level of awareness and acceptance of premarital genetic counseling among undergraduate students in University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. The study adopted the descriptive research design and multistage sampling method was used to select four hundred and Nineteen students in the University of Benin. A well-structured questionnaire was used as instruments of data collection. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The level of significance was set at p<0.05. The analysis was done using the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0 for windows. The result from the study showed that majority of the respondents had a poor level of knowledge, less than half had a good a good level of knowledge while 23.2% had a fair level of knowledge. The study therefore recommends that government and multinational agencies should make concerted efforts to ensure that people adequately understand and adhere to premarital counselling.
