ABSTRACT
This study assessed the availability and extent of use of instructional materials for the effective teaching and learning of chemistry in Egor local government area Edo state. Specifically the study determined to find out the available instructional materials, equipment and supplies in senior secondary school in Egor local government area, the extent chemistry teachers utilized such materials in teaching, impact instructional material has on the academic performance of students and teachers improvise of instructional materials in teaching Chemistry.
The descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population for the study comprised 20,686 chemistry student and 183 chemistry teachers in Egor Local Government. The proportionate random sampling technique was adopted of the study and a sample size of 100 chemistry student and 25 chemistry teachers were drawn for the study. The research instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire titled “Availability and Extent of Use of Instructional Material for Effective Teaching and Learning of Chemistry”. The questionnaire comprised of 5 sections: Section A-E. section A elicits information on the personal data of the respondents while B,C,D and E had items aimed at providing relevant information in respect to the research questions. The questions items were designed on four point Likert rating scale. The instrument was validated by project supervisor and tested for reliability using test-retest reliability and its reliability co-efficient was 0.683.
The findings of the study revealed that ; there are sufficient textbook for student in the learning of chemistry and Utilization of Instructional materials assist teachers in his task helping him increases his effectiveness in the classroom. In conclusion , it was concluded From the finding of the study that there are few instructional materials made available for teaching chemistry. Based on the result, it was recommended that adequate instructional materials for the teaching of chemistry in senior secondary school should be provided by ministry of education and school management. Utilization of instructional materials should be encouraged at all levels of education.
