Abstract
This study focuses on the availability and use of instructional materials in the teaching of biology in Benin metropolis. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. this study adopted the descriptive survey research design.
The population of the study was 78 biology teachers in Benin metropolis. 62 teachers formed the sample of the study. They were sampled using the random and purposive technique.
the instrument used in the study was a questionnaire titled “Availability and Use of Instructional Materials in the Teaching of Biology in Benin metropolis”. Data obtained from the instrument were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test.
Findings from the study revealed that the instructional materials available for teaching biology are are beaker, bones, charts, computer, and lens, heating sources, microscope, multimedia projector, petri-dishes, preserved specimens, textbooks, test-tubes, whiteboard while botanical garden and ecological instrument are not used. It was also revealed that there is a significant gender difference in teachers` use of instructional materials based on sex. Recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.
