ABSTRACT

This study examines availability of qualified teachers in effective teaching and learning of literary studies.This study adopted the Proportionate sampling technique In order to achieve the purpose of this study, five research questions were raised. The sample for the study consists of one hundred (100) respondents which were selected using the simple random sampling method. Data was collected with the aid of questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the instrument were ascertained using the exert judgment and test-retest procedures.  Simple percentage and frequency count were used to analyse collected data.

Based on the findings of the study it was ascertained that some of the factors affecting the availability of effective teachers in secondary schools include: delay in salary payment, delay in promotion, inadequate motivation bad leadership styles of principals. Teacher effectiveness is a multidimensional concept since it measures a variety of different aspects of teaching such as; mastery of duties or roles, effective communication, lesson preparation and presentation, availability of instructional materials, conducive classroom and teachers motivation. Teachers’ effectiveness could be a significant predictor of students’ academic achievement, therefore, effective teacher should produce students of high academic performance.
