ABSTRACT
This study investigated the availability and utilization of teaching aids for teaching and learning of English language in the University of Benin. In order to achieve the research objectives, specific purpose of the study were identify which enhanced the formulation of three research questions. The researcher reviewed some related literature and project work related to the concept of teaching aids, types and availability of teaching aids, utilization of teaching aids, exploring teaching aids for language instruction in the 21st century. The population comprised three hundred and twenty-six (326) respondents made up of English language tutors and undergraduate students from two faculties in University of Benin. A simple random sampling will be used to select respondents. A structured questionnaire of 22 items was used in collecting relevant information to the study. All questionnaires were collected back and analysed with the use of percentages. The result of the study revealed that: there is availability of public address system for teaching and learning English language in the University of Benin. Audio visual aids like audio recordings, videos, and multimedia presentations are not available aids for teaching and learning English language. Also, the factors hindering the availability and utilization of instructional material for teaching and learning of English language are high cost of instructional materials; insufficient fund; lack of trained personnel to use instructional materials; vandalization of instructional materials; poor maintenance culture; irregular supervision of instructional materials, lack of policy guidelines; enrolment explosion; and lack of storage facilities. Based on the findings it was recommended among others; Government should provide funds for the procurement of instructional materials in tertiary institutions in order to enhance the teaching and learning of English language, Lecturers should effectively utilize the available instructional materials in the lecture room or hall to enhance lesson delivery.
