ABSTRACT

The study focused on the availability and utilization of instructional materials for effective teaching and learning in adult literacy centers in Benin metropolis. Five research questions were raised to guide the study.

The descriptive research design was adopted for the study.  A structured questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by the researchers’ supervisor before administration. Data from the questionnaire were presented in tables and were analysed using mean and standard deviation.

The findings of the study revealed that: the types of instructional materials needed in adult literacy programme include: Slideshows, Textbooks, Computers, Televisions, Charts, DVD/VCD, Interactive boards, Multimedia projectors, Globe, Internet/Web Environment, Cassette Recorder/ Player, Maps and periodicals; the available instructional materials for teaching adult learners in Adult Learning in Benin Metropolis are; textbooks, television, computers, charts, interactive boards, and the internet/Web Environment; to a large extent are the instructional materials are efficiently used by the facilitators in adult literacy centers in Benin metropolis; the factors affecting the use of instructional materials in adult literacy centers in Benin metropolis include: Funding, Availability of instructional materials, Teacher knowledge and Skills and Instructor’s willingness to use instructional materials; and to a large extent are instructional materials utilized in the adult literacy centers in Benin metropolis. Based on the findings of this work, the following recommendations are made: more so there should be availability of more instructional materials for teaching adult learners in Adult Lsoearning in Benin Metropolis; adult literacy centers in Benin Metropolis should keep updating the available instructional materials; adult literacy centers in Benin Metropolis should keep using available instructional materials in teaching adult learners; and the challenges confronting the use of audio-visual materials in Adult Learning in Benin Metropolis should be addressed
