ABSTRACT This is a survey study designed to investigate the availability and use of instructional materials in teaching Biology in some selected secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The study was aimed at ascertaining the available instructional materials and whether the teacher uses the instructional materials or not. At the end three(3) research questions were raised to guide the study.
A sample size of twenty five (25) teachers from the thirteen (13) public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area participated in the study. The instruments used were a checklist and questionnaire validated by my project supervisor and two other experts from the Faculty of Education. The reliability was gotten through the use of Cronbach’s Alpha and a coefficient of 0.73 was gotten. The data collected was analysed using the Mean difference and t-test for independent samples.
Results of data analysis showed that instructional materials for teaching Biology in secondary schools were neither available nor utilized amongst the schools used for the research. It also showed that there was no significant difference in the utilization of instructional materials by Biology teachers by Gender. Some solutions include: the Government should invest more in the purchasing and maintaining of instructional materials in public schools, only qualified Biology teachers should be employed to teach, there should not be over-population in classrooms, the teachers should utilize instructional materials in order to arouse the interest of the students and time allocated for teaching should be increased so that instructional materials could be conveniently used in the period. Hence, there is much need for sufficient qualified and competent biology teachers, adequate availability and utilization of instructional materials for effective teaching and learning of Biology in all the secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.
