ABSTRACT
COVID-19 affected the education industry greatly. During the pandemic, all schools were shut down and the Federal Government instructed schools to adopt online modes of teaching and learning. This study assessed the availability and use of e-Learning tools for chemistry teaching and learning in secondary schools in Benin City. Three research questions and corresponding hypotheses were raised to guide the study. The descriptive survey design was employed. The population of the study comprises chemistry students from selected public senior secondary schools in Benin City. The sample consisted of One hundred and seven students. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire on the availability and use of eLearning tools for chemistry teaching. The instrument consisted of three sections. Section A is on student’s Biodata, section B is a list of different types of eLearning tools and section C is an open-ended section on any other type of eLearning tools not listed in section B. The instrument was face validated by the supervisor. The instrument was administered to the students in their various schools by the researcher with the assistance of their class teacher. Students responded to the questionnaire which was collected on the spott. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that eLearning tools were not used in both public and private schools during the lockdown. Male and female students in the various schools confirmed that eLearning tools were not used. Students at different levels also confirmed that eLearning tools were not used in the schools. It was then concluded that contrary to the Federal Government instructions, schools sampled for the study did not have online teaching and learning of chemistry. It was recommended that the government should have the strong political will to provide funds for the provision of infrastructural and e-learning facilities in secondary schools in Benin City to enhance teachers’ teaching and students’ learning online in this digital era.
