ABSTRACT

This study examined the “Availability and Adequacy of English Teachers in the Teaching and Learning of English Language in Junior Secondary Schools, Egor Local Government”. The researcher adopted the descriptive survey research design method to conduct the study. The target population consisted of teachers in 5 schools such as Uselu Secondary School, Evbareke Secondary School, Iyoba Girls College, Edo boy’s High School, and Federal Government Girls College,Egor in Egor local government. However, the sample size of this study comprised 15 teachers from the schools mentioned above. The research instrument used for the study was questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into two sections. “Section A” was designed to generate personal information of the respondents, While the “Section B” comprised of items on the topic under research. It was constructed with care to reflect the problem of the study such that the items would be relevant to the purpose of the study. The instrument was reviewed and certified by the project supervisor and two (2) other experts in Faculty of Education, all in University of Benin. Findings revealed that there are no adequate availability of English teachers in the teaching and learning of English Language in junior secondary schools in Egor local government. And this can result to poor students’ academic performance, poor language proficiency, and poor English communication skill. Based on these findings, the following were recommended; that the Egor local government need to prioritize the recruitment of well-qualified English teachers to address the shortage of educators in junior secondary schools. Also the Egor local government should consider offering financial incentives or benefits to attract and retain qualified English teachers in the region. Competitive salaries and benefits can motivate teachers to stay.
