ABSTRACT
This study investigated Automation of academic libraries: the challenges and gains to the library staff and users of john Harris library university of Benin. For the purpose of the study, five research questions were formulated to guide the research. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for the investigation while the study population and samples consists of 50 librarians and 50 library users from the John Harris library, university of Benin, Relevant data were collected from the sample through personal contact method of administration of copies of researchers’ made Automation of academic libraries: the challenges and gains to the library staff and users of John Harris library university of Benin. (AALCLSUJHQ). The data collected were presented in Tables and analyzed using descriptive statistics comprising of mean. A criterion of mean score of 2.5 was used as the benchmark for the purpose of decision making. The findings from analyzed include: that the major advantage of library automation is that it can save time and labor also prevents books from thefts. The use of computer in library has made information seeking effectively and efficiently, to store, retrieve, and disseminate. In order to manage the flow of books coming in and going out, libraries utilize a library automation system. Based on the findings, some recommendation were made which include: The management of various academic libraries in Nigeria should prepare to automate their library services by carrying out adequate planning. When there is proper planning, execution becomes easier. They can itemize all what they need and map out strategies on how to get them.
