ABSTRACT

In a world where there is the emergence of citizen journalism and fake news, individuals always turn to the broadcast media to find credible and verified information. The study is focused on examining the audience perception of the Broadcast media news reportage of the 2022 ASUU Strike; a case study of UNIBEN full-time Mass Communication students. It is aimed at understanding the perception level of the news reportage and the challenges faced by students due to the ASUU Strike. The study made use of a survey research method and 280 questionnaires were administered on the respondents. Data gathered were analysed by the use of table constructs, summary, frequency counts and simple percentages. The result obtained showed that the audience are aware of the 2022 ASUU Strike and the news reportage. It also revealed that the audience were affected by the strike. The researcher therefore concluded that most of the respondents were not satisfied with the news coverage by the television stations as due prominence was not given. The researcher also recommended that the media houses conduct full research so as to be able to give full and accurate information.
