ABSTRACT

This research study investigates the level of awareness and knowledge among Mass Communication students at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) regarding voice-over practices and their profitability within the Nigerian media landscape. Voice-over, a fundamental component of media production, plays a significant role in various sectors, including advertising, broadcasting, and entertainment. Understanding the awareness and perceptions of voice-over practices is essential for both students aspiring to enter the industry and educators preparing them for future careers. The research employs a quantitative approach, utilizing survey questionnaires distributed to a sample of Mass Communication students at UNIBEN. The survey assesses students' comprehension of voice-over as a concept, their familiarity with its various applications, and their understanding of the economic potential within the field. Additionally, the study explores students' preferences, perceptions, and career aspirations related to voice-over.

Preliminary findings reveal that a substantial portion of the surveyed students perceive voice-over primarily as a form of audio recording. A notable percentage also associates it with television, indicating its relevance in broadcast media. However, a significant portion regards voice-over as less important in media production, highlighting the need for educational initiatives to elucidate its significance. Moreover, a majority of respondents lack knowledge about the profitability of voice-over services in Nigeria, indicating a potential gap in information dissemination. While renowned voice-over artists are recognized, a considerable portion of students has not considered pursuing a career in this field. This research contributes to the discourse on media education and career development by shedding light on the perceptions and awareness of voice-over practices among Mass Communication students, with the hope of fostering informed career choices and industry growth in Nigeria.
