The Human Immune deficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that infects the immune cells of the body. The infection leads to Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) which is the advanced phase of HIV infection. Sexual abstinence is a very important method of prevention because it poses no risk for heterosexual transmission of the virus and other diseases. The objective of this study is to ascertain the attitude towards sexual abstinence as a preventive measure of HIV/AIDS among undergraduates in University of Benin which will help proffer insight on how HIV/AIDS can be prevented through sexual abstinence. The study was carried out using a descriptive cross-sectional survey and non-experimental design. A total of three hundred and seventy (370) undergraduates were sampled from the population of undergraduates in University of Benin. A multi stage sampling technique was considered adequate for the study with certain inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data was collected using a well-structured questionnaire, which was administered and collected from the respondents. Results from the findings showed that the overall attitude of Undergraduates was positive and also there’s a significant relationship between the factors associated with sexual abstinence and the attitude of the respondents. In conclusion, The respondents have a positive attitude towards sexual abstinence and a reasonable amount got their information on abstinence from the hospital but the awareness of abstinence through abstinence programmes were very low. These findings highlight several strategies to improve the positive attitude of the undergraduates towards sexual abstinence and increase the rate of HIV/AIDS prevention strategy through sexual abstinence.
