ABSTRACT

The study investigated the attitude of undergraduate students of the University of Benin towards democratic values. Five research questions were raised. The survey research design was employed in the study. The study population was 7, 470 students in the University of Benin, Benin City. The sample size comprised of 200 respondents. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire which was distributed to the respondents. The instrument was retrieved and analyzed using simple percentage. From the results of the data analysed, the study revealed that the students study showed positive attitude to democratic values such as freedom and liberty, human right protection and resistance to corruption-resistance. Students did not indicate significant interest in political participation like campaigning and voting. Based on these findings it was recommended that students should imbibe democratic values while discharging their civic duties inside and outside the campus. Students’ unions should be seriously involved to help create the awareness, understanding and internalization of democratic values in students through workshops and seminars.
