ABSTRACT
Religion plays a central role in the lives of many people in Nigeria and around the world. However, there has been a research on the attitudes of students towards the study of religion in the University of Benin. This is particularly relevant where there's lack of interest towards the study of Religion in Schools especially in a country with religious diversity and a complex history of religious conflict. The objective of this project is to explore the attitudes of students towards the study of religion at the University of Benin, to find out how students view religion with respect to other discipline and also find out the challenges student face during the study of Religion. This study utilized a mixed methods approach, including both quantitative and qualitative data collection. Questionnaires were distributed to students of religion of both Faculty of Arts and Education at the University of Benin, asking about their opinions towards the study of religion, including questions about perceived value of religious studies when compared to other course of studies, attitudes of students towards the study of religion, Teaching methods used by religion lecturers, factors affecting the study of religion like parental influence and Textbooks and challenges student face during the study of Religion. Findings show that students like religion as a course of study, although the students do not believe that religion has the same level status as other professional courses. Results obtained also shows that many students agree that religion as a course is productive in the 21st century. However, others expressed concerns about job opportunities for graduates of Religion. These findings highlight the need for universities to address the status of religious studies and provide insight into how to enhance the learning experience of students in this discipline.
