ATTITUDE OF STUDENTS TOWARDS THE STUDY OF ACCOUNTING IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OWAN EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study sought to examine the Attitude of Students Towards the Study of Accounting in Senior Secondary Schools in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State. The study was carried out among 100 respondents who are SS1 and SS3 students of financial accounting in Owan East Local Government. The research instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the field and a reliability was done through a test-retest procedure. The findings of the study showed that the scores registered by S.S. 1 students appear to be close to those of their counterparts in S.S. 3. Both groups agreed on the statement “I would enjoy being an accountant”. Also S.S. 1 agreed to the statement “The accounting profession is well- respected” with 40 respondents as compared to 35 S.S. 3 students assigned to the same statement. The study recommended that the educational Sector should through training of teachers in the use of effective instructional method in the classroom, especially in the use of guided discovery in financial accounting instruction; Professional bodies should organize seminars, workshops and in- house training for teachers and textbook authors in the use of Guided Discovery Method in financial accounting and other effective methods of teaching other courses; and finally; Incentives such as scholarships, grants or loans should be made available to research students and institutions to carry-out more work or study on effective strategies in classroom instructions in general and particularly more study should be done on various techniques of using guided discovery method in classroom teaching and learning.
