ABSTRACT
This study investigated the attitudes of health education students towards teaching health education in secondary schools. It explored their perceptions, examined how the curriculum influences their attitudes, and analyzed the effect of socio-cultural factors on their willingness to teach sensitive topics such as sexual and reproductive health. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The target population comprised 559 health education students from the Faculty of Education, University of Benin, from which a stratified random sample of 56 students was selected to ensure fair representation across academic levels. Data collection was conducted using a self-structured questionnaire titled Attitudes of Health Education Students towards the Teaching of Health Education in Secondary Schools. The instrument was validated by an expert in Health Education, and its reliability was determined through the test-retest method. Data were analyzed using frequency counts and simple percentages. The results showed that most students had a positive attitude towards teaching health education, expressing enthusiasm and confidence in delivering lessons. However, certain challenges, including insufficient resources and limited hands-on training in the curriculum, were identified. Additionally, socio-cultural factors significantly influenced students' willingness to teach specific health topics, with some respondents citing discomfort due to cultural norms and societal expectations. The study concluded that health education is essential in secondary schools, as it plays a vital role in fostering healthy habits among students. It recommended that educational institutions strengthen the curriculum by incorporating more practical components, providing adequate resources, and implementing awareness programs to address cultural barriers to teaching health topics. These steps will enhance students' preparedness and effectiveness in delivering health education in secondary schools
