ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION AMONG WOMEN OF REPRODUCTIVE AGE IN A TERTIARY HEALTH FACILITY IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

Female genital mutilation is a harmful traditional practice in Africa that has adverse effects on the physical, psychological, asexual and reproductive health of women. This study aims to ascertain the attitude and practice of female genital mutilation, the attitude, the extents of practice and the determinant factors influencing the practice of female genital mutilation among women of reproductive age attending tertiary health facilities in Benin City, Edo state. A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used. A sample of 316 women were selected, using simple random sampling technique. Self-structured questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection. Analysis was done with statistical package or social sciences (SPSS).

Results from the study showed that (54.1%) of the respondents has undergone female genital mutilation. Majority of the respondents (51.9%) showed a negative attitude towards the practice of female genital mutilation, while (64.9%) of the respondents had undergone FGM at birth, (76.3%) of the respondent believes that female genital mutilation is not done by health professionals, (65.2%) of the respondent believes it is done in an unclean environment. Therefore, it is recommended that nurses should educate the public about the health, sexual and psychological consequences of female genital mutilation.
