ABSTRACT

This study examined the attitude and perception of parents towards the education of children with visual impairment, using Oredo local government as a case study. The study was specifically carried out to examine the attitude of parents towards the education of children with visual impairment in Oredo local government, the perception of parents towards the education of children with visual impairment in Oredo local government, the challenges parents face and factors that influences the parents in the education of children with visual impairment in Oredo local government and proffers solutions to these challenges parents face in the education of children with visual impairment in Oredo local government. The study was anchored on the information processing theory. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Hence, the questionnaire was used for data collection, while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. A total of 50 respondents were selected as sample size using Yamane sampling method. The participants consists of parents of children with visual impairment in Oredo local government. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings reveals that the challenges parents face in the education of children with visual impairment in Oredo local government includes: stigmatization, social discrimination, poverty, ignorance and negligence. The study therefore recommends that there is need for these parents of children with visual impairment to be supported both by the school, the government and the community and there should be organizations that could accommodate these stigmatized parents of these children with visual impairment in the society.
