ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to investigate attitude and awareness towards breast cancer campaign among female undergraduate students of University of Benin

Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study. The method adopted by the researcher is the descriptive survey research design. A review of related literature was carried out. A total of one hundred students in different faculties in University of Benin main campus constituted the sample size. The instrument used for gathering data from the selected sample was a questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was established at 0.71 using Cronbach statistics. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of percentage and mean.

 The study revealed that, students are aware of breast cancer such as; breast cancer is a diseased cell that grow out of control, all women are at risk of breast cancer, women that engage in smoking have a risk of breast cancer. The sources of awareness on breast cancer are from; government sponsored adverts / campaign, visitation of health care facilities, family and friends, educational institutions and Non-governmental organization (NGO). Female students have positive attitude and do believe in misconception towards breast cancer, regular personal examination of the breast, exercise, early identification and reporting to a medical experts, reducing the use of hormonal birth control and limiting the consumption of alcohol by women.It was concluded that, early detection is the key to treatment and the risk reduction through enhance knowledge and awareness about breast cancer awareness campaigns especially through the electronic media. It was recommended that, health education programme should be organized to educate women about their breast health.
