ABSTRACT
The study examined secondary school students’ awareness and use of web applications in learning English Language. In order to achieve the intended objectives of the study, four research questions were raised. The study also sought to determine whether there are any difference in student’s awareness towards the use of web applications in learning English language based on gender and age. The descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. The population of the study was made up of all senior secondary school students in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo state. Thirt- five students were randomly drawn from five schools in Ovia North-East LGA of Edo state. A questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics such of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The findings showed that Students have average level of awareness of web applications for language learning (English). Both male and female students have high awareness of two web apps that can be used in English Language learning, they are: Dictionary.com, and FluentU, both male and female students’ awareness level in the other five listed web apps; Babbel, LingQ, Rosetta Stone, Memrise and Pimsleur are low and the age bracket with the highest level of awareness is 16 - 18 years. The following recommendations amongst others were made; organize awareness programs and training sessions for students, especially those in the 13- 15 age group, to enhance their knowledge of web applications designed for 11 language learning. Provide resources and guidance to help students explore and utilize these tools effectively.
