ABSTRACT

This study examined secondary school students’ awareness and use of digital technology in vocabulary development. In order to achieve the intended objectives of the study, five research questions were raised.  The study also sought to determine whether there were any difference in student’s awareness towards the use digital technology in vocabulary development based on gender and age.

            The descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. The population of the study was made up of all senior secondary school students in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo state. Fourty students were randomly drawn from  five schools in Ovia North-East LGA of Edo state. A questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics such of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation.

The findings showed that Students have a moderate level of computer literacy, students’ level of awareness of web applications used for vocabulary development is high, students’ usage level of web applications for vocabulary development is moderate. Both male and female students moderately make use of web applications for vocabulary development and students in age group, 16 – 18 years has the highest usage level of web applicators used for vocabulary development. The following recommendations amongst others were made; schools and educators focus on improving students' computer skills. Providing basic computer literacy courses or workshops can help students become more proficient in using digital tools for vocabulary development
