ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of globalization, and the internet in the learning of the English language in Senior Secondary Schools Benin Metropolis Area of Edo State as a case study. This research, conducted in Benin City, assessed students' awareness of the significance of the internet, and their familiarity with well-known language learning apps/platforms. The study surveyed 100 students across the Secondary Schools in Benin Metropolis Area.  Five research questions were raised to guide the study

A survey research design was adopted for the conduct of the study using a questionnaire as the instrument for gathering data to answer the research questions. The instrument was carefully validated Descriptive frequency, mean, standard deviation, and tables were used to present the results for ease of discussion.

The findings from the study showed that majority of students are aware of and utilize the internet for English language learning, they’re equally aware of apps that can be used in English Language learning with the respondents indicating high level of awareness of Duolingo and Dictionary.com.  The study found that male students’ usage of the internet for academic purpose is high, compared to the females. The study also concluded that the age bracket of 16-18years use the internet for academic purposes more than the other age brackets surveyed in the research.

Based on the findings and conclusion, appropriate recommendations like organizing awareness programs to enlighten students on the use of the internet for language learning, and introduction of the use of the internet, and online language learning platforms in the curriculum to make students more familiar with varieties of language learning options in English Language learning were given to improve the learning of English language using the internet.
